Swedish Schools

In Sweden school is compulsory from 1st to 9th grade, which begins at age seven. After 9th grade almost all students continues to high school, which we call "gymnasium". As an exchange student you will study at a gymnasium. At this level students can choose a group of subject that they would like to study. You can either choose a program where you study subjects as social science, history, religion and languages; focus on more science like biology, physics and chemistry; or the art programs where you can choose to study visual arts, music or dance.

When you apply to go to Sweden as an exchange student you will get the chance to choose specifically which type of program you would like to read. If you do not make this selection you will be placed at a school and program we think will fit you.

Many exchange students finds Swedish schools to be very open, flexible and democratic. The students are supposed to be responsible and very independent. A lot of times you will get school assignments that you are supposed to accomplish without the teacher’s help. This means that you as a student have to be ready to work a lot on your own and together with you classmates.

In Sweden you will be studying with more or less the same group of people everyday the whole year. You will study with students the same age as you and who are attending the same program as you are.

You will get lunch in school for no cost and the schooldays usually begin around 8-9 am and ends around 3-4 pm five days a week. Your schedule will be different each day of the week.
